3 day Trekking Sembalun
3 Day 2 night Mount Rinjani Trekking sembalun summit and end in torean trekking routes
Experience the ultimate Mount Rinjani adventure reach the summit at 3,726 meters, soak in the natural hot springs by the crater lake, and trek out through Lombok’s most stunning valleys.
This 3-day, 2-night trekking program is one of the most complete ways to explore Rinjani. Starting from the Sembalun trailhead on the eastern slope, you’ll cross wide savanna grasslands, camp under the stars at the crater rim, and climb to the Rinjani Summit for sunrise — one of the most iconic views in Indonesia. From there, descend to the emerald-blue Segara Anak Lake, where you can relax in hot springs and enjoy the magical volcanic landscape.
From the lake, there are two possible exit routes:
Via Senaru: After reaching Segara Anak Lake (±2,000 m), trekkers must climb back up to Pelawangan Senaru (2,641 m). From there, the descent follows a long, steep trail through dense jungle. This route is physically challenging but rewards climbers with breathtaking views from Pelawangan Senaru, including the surrounding valleys, the crater rim, and sweeping landscapes of Lombok.
Via Torean: Instead of climbing back up, the Torean trail descends directly from the lake. While it avoids the extra uphill section, parts of the trail are very steep and slippery, requiring caution. Torean offers a more scenic exit with lush valleys, dramatic cliffs, flowing rivers, and hidden waterfalls, making it an unforgettable way to end your trek.
Which route is better?
It’s difficult to say which is “better,” as both routes have unique beauty and unforgettable landscapes. Pelawangan Senaru offers spectacular panoramic views of the crater and surrounding mountains, while Torean impresses with its tropical valleys, cliffs, and hidden waterfalls. Each route delivers a different experience, and both are amazing in their own way
Why choose the 3-day trekking Sembalun-Torerean?
- This is not just a trek — it’s the most complete way to experience Mount Rinjani.
- Unlike standard routes that return the same way, the Sembalun–Torean route lets you traverse the mountain from east to west, making every step fresh and unforgettable.
- What makes this route the ultimate highlight? Summit from the more straightforward approach — The Sembalun trail offers a gentler ascent to the crater rim and summit, improving your chances of summit success.
- Soak in volcanic hot springs by the lake — After summiting, relax in the warm waters of Segara Anak Lake — a rare and rewarding experience inside an active volcano.
- Descend via Rinjani’s secret valleys — The Torean trail unveils dramatic jungle cliffs, clear rivers, and the towering Penimbungan Waterfall, plunging into a lush canyon.
- Diverse landscapes in just 3 days — From grassy savannas and volcanic ridges to crater lakes, hot springs, deep valleys, and tropical jungle — no other Rinjani route offers this much variety.
- Less crowded, peaceful finish — The Torean trail is quieter, letting you end your trek in solitude, surrounded by nature. This traverse is Rinjani’s ultimate journey if you want more than just a summit trek.

Advantages & Disadvantages of the 3-day trekking Sembalun–Torean Route
Advantages
Complete mountain traverse — no backtracking
Start in Sembalun and finish in Torean, experiencing Rinjani from multiple angles without repeating the same trail.
Easier summit approach and smoother overall descent
The gradual incline of the Sembalun trail makes summit access more manageable, and descending via Torean is less punishing on the knees compared to the steep Senaru descent.
Diverse landscapes in one trek
Cross open grasslands, volcanic ridges, crater lakes, hot springs, jungle valleys, and waterfalls — all in a single 3-day journey.
Quieter, less crowded exit route
The Torean trail sees fewer trekkers than the more popular Senaru route, giving you a more peaceful, immersive experience.
Scenic finish in lush jungle valleys
End your trek with dramatic valley views, tropical rivers, and the towering Penimbungan Waterfall — a beautiful and refreshing contrast to the volcanic summit.
Disadvantages
- Longer total distance and more varied terrain
Covering more ground means longer trekking days and more varied (sometimes challenging) trail conditions. - Torean trail can be slippery and muddy (especially after rain)
Narrow jungle paths, exposed ridges, and river crossings can become treacherous in wet conditions, requiring good footwear, balance, and caution. - Requires extra transport (different start and end points)
- Logistics involve separate transfers to the starting point (Sembalun) and from the endpoint (Torean village), adding some coordination.
- River crossings and steep descents can be tiring on the final day
- The Torean route includes narrow trails, steep downhill sections, and several small river crossings — challenging when legs are fatigued after multiple trekking days.

Mount Rinjani is one of the most iconic trekking destinations in the world. To protect the mountain’s natural beauty and ensure a safe experience, the National Park limits the number of climbers each day. This system is called the trekking quota, and it’s divided into two categories:
For Indonesian citizens or domestic trekkers, 160 slots are available daily. These are reserved for climbers registering independently at the Rinjani Trekking Centre in Senaru or Sembalun. Local quotas tend to fill quickly during busy periods, so early planning is still highly recommended.
For safety, stay in a group and follow your guide arrangement.
