Frequently Asked Questions
Mount Rinjani FAQ  with Green Rinjani

1. General Information

Mount Rinjani (Indonesian: Gunung Rinjani) is an active volcano on Lombok Island, Indonesia. Administratively, it lies in North Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). The National Park covers around 41,330 hectares, including the volcano, crater lake (Segara Anak), hot springs, and surrounding protected forest. At 3,726 meters (12,224 ft), Mount Rinjani is the second-highest volcano in Indonesia and the highest peak in Lombok.

The summit of Mount Rinjani reaches 3,726 meters (12,224 ft) above sea level (AMSL).
It is a challenging but rewarding climb, offering panoramic views of Lombok, Bali, Sumbawa, and the crater lake below.

Mount Rinjani has a tropical mountain climate, meaning temperatures vary greatly depending on altitude and time of day.
Summit (3,726 m): 0 °C – 3 °C before sunrise (can feel below freezing with wind chill).
Crater Rim Senaru & Sembalun (~2,600 m): 8 °C – 12 °C at night.
Lake Segara Anak & Torean camping area (~2,000 m): 8 °C – 15 °C.
Daytime (lower slopes & base): 25 °C – 35 °C.
Tip: Warm clothing is essential, especially for the summit attempt.

The Mount Rinjani National Park Authority strictly limits the daily number of trekkers to 400 people per day (excluding guides and porters). This quota is divided into:
240 climbers → reserved for licensed trekking organizers (tour operators such as Green Rinjani).
160 climbers → reserved for the general public or domestic hikers who book independently.
This system was introduced to:
Protect the fragile mountain ecosystem and reduce environmental impact.
Avoid overcrowding at campsites and along the trails.
Maintain safety standards for all visitors.
Ensure a more comfortable and enjoyable trekking experience.
Because the quota fills up quickly during the peak season (July–September), we highly recommend booking your trek well in advance to secure your permit.

Yes, trekking Mount Rinjani is generally safe as long as you join with a licensed trekking organizer and follow your guide’s instructions.
For your safety:
Always stay on the marked trails.
Listen carefully to your guide’s advice.
Never trek alone or separate from your group.
Most accidents happen when climbers ignore safety rules, leave the official trail, or trek without a certified guide.
Advice: Avoid joining groups that are too large, especially in a sharing package. Big groups can be harder to manage and less personal. An ideal ratio is about 6–8 trekkers with 2 professional guides, supported by porters. This ensures:
Everyone gets proper attention and support.
Safety is maintained for the whole team.
A more enjoyable trekking experience.
At Green Rinjani, your safety is our top priority. We provide experienced guides, trained porters, quality camping equipment, and responsible group sizes to give you the best possible trekking experience.

We recommend booking your Mount Rinjani trek at least 1–2 months before your planned departure date.
Here’s why early booking is important:
Entry ticket quota is limited → only 400 climbers per day are allowed, and tickets sell out quickly during the high season (July–September).
Guides & porters are limited → each trek requires experienced staff, and their availability is very tight in peak season.
Logistics need preparation → food supplies, camping equipment, and transportation must be arranged in advance to ensure a smooth trip.
By booking early, you ensure that your entry ticket, professional guide, porter team, and camping equipment are all confirmed and ready. This helps avoid last-minute stress and guarantees the best trekking experience.

Getting to Green Rinjani office in Senaru or the starting points for the trek is easy. Lombok is well connected by plane, ferry, and fast boat.
✈️ By Plane The fastest and easiest way is to fly into Lombok International Airport (LOP) in Central Lombok.
Direct flights are available daily from Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya, and several international destinations (Singapore, Kuala Lumpur).
Airlines include Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, AirAsia, TransNusa, Citilink, and others.
From the airport, it takes about 3.5 hours by car to reach Senaru (Green Rinjani office).
⛴️ By Ferry
From Bali: Public ferries depart from Padang Bai (Bali) to Lembar Harbor (Lombok). The trip takes 4–5 hours, and you can bring motorbikes or cars on board.
From Sumbawa: Ferries connect Poto Tano (Sumbawa) with Labuhan Lombok several times a day, about 1.5 hours sailing time.
💡 Tip: Be prepared for possible rough seas if you’re prone to seasickness.
🚤 By Fast Boat A quicker option from Bali or the Gilis is the fast boat service:
Departure points: Serangan, Padang Bai, Nusa Penida.
Arrival point: Bangsal Harbor (North Lombok), just 45 minutes from Senaru by car.
Travel time: 2–3 hours depending on sea conditions.
🚗 Getting Around Lombok
Once you arrive in Lombok, you can use our private transfer service with English-speaking drivers.
We provide airport, harbor, and hotel pick-ups anywhere on Lombok.
Comfortable private cars are arranged to take you directly to Senaru, Sembalun, or other destinations.
Beyond trekking, we also offer daily tours around Lombok, so you can explore waterfalls, beaches, cultural villages, and viewpoints.
💡 Booking your transfer with Green Rinjani ensures everything is organized smoothly from your arrival until the trek begins

2. Trekking Season & Timing

Mount Rinjani National Park is officially open for trekking 9 months each year, from April to December.
The park is closed every year from January to March due to the rainy season, when heavy rainfall makes the trails slippery and dangerous.
During this period, the National Park Authority also carries out ecosystem recovery and trail maintenance.
In rare cases, the park may also close outside this schedule if there is increased volcanic activity or natural hazards.

The best time to trek Mount Rinjani is during the dry season, from May to October.
May–June → Fewer crowds, green landscapes, and fresh weather after the rainy season.
July–August → Peak season with the largest number of trekkers (book early as permits and guides sell out fast).
September–October → Still good weather with fewer tourists, ideal for quieter trekking.
Note: Climate has changed in recent years, so occasional rain can still occur even in the dry season. Always check the latest weather forecast before your trek.

We do not recommend booking a flight on the same day you finish your trek. Descending Mount Rinjani is physically demanding, and delays can happen.
Trekking usually ends in the late afternoon.
Travel time from Senaru/Sembalun to Lombok International Airport (LOP) is about 3.5–4 hours by car.
If you must fly on the same day, only book flights after 9:00 PM to avoid stress and rushing.
Best advice: Stay overnight in Lombok after your trek and fly the next day so you can rest and recover properly.

No, a one-day hike to the summit (3,726 m) is not possible or permitted.
The trek to the summit requires at least 2 days/1 night, starting from Sembalun.
The climb involves long distances and a midnight ascent, which cannot be safely done in one day.
However, you can join a 1-day trek option from Senaru to the Senaru Crater Rim (2,641 m).
This is a good alternative if you have limited time but still want to enjoy breathtaking views of the Rinjani crater, Segara Anak Lake, and the summit from afar.

It depends on your trekking program and how quickly your group descends on the final day.
For the 2-day / 1-night Summit trek, it’s usually not possible to reach the public boat to the Gilis in time. The last public boat from Bangsal Harbor departs at 5:00 PM, and most trekkers arrive later than this after finishing the trek and driving down.
For longer programs (3D2N or 4D3N), there is a higher chance to catch the public boat — but only if you descend and transfer quickly.
Alternative solution if you miss the public boat:
We can arrange a private speedboat transfer from Bangsal to the Gili Islands after your trek.
Price: IDR 400,000 per boat (for up to 4 people).
For groups larger than 4, an additional charge applies.
Tip: If visiting the Gili Islands is important to your plan, let us know in advance. We will help arrange the fastest possible transfer so you don’t lose time after trekking.

Most Rinjani trekking programs begin in the morning between 7:30 – 8:00 AM.
Before starting, trekkers usually have breakfast in Senaru or Sembalun, then complete registration at the Rinjani National Park office.
The actual trekking on the trail usually starts around 8:30 – 9:00 AM, depending on the group and route.

The trek usually finishes by 1:00 – 3:00 PM, depending on the program, your walking pace, and the route (Senaru, Sembalun, or Torean).
After descending, you’ll need 3–4 hours by car to return to the airport, harbor, or your next destination.
Tip: If you plan to fly on the same day you finish trekking, choose a flight after 8:00 PM from Lombok International Airport to allow enough time for the descent, transport, and airport check-in.

3. Trekking Routes & Packages

The most popular routes are:
still Sembalun → Summit → Senaru (3D2N) and Torean route (as descent). Many trekkers also choose 2D1N Senaru Crater Rim if they only want a short trek without reaching the summit

Sembalun: Best if your goal is to reach the summit (3,726m). The trail is more open and gradual, but also hotter with little shade.
Senaru: Best for a shorter trek (2D1N Crater Rim) with beautiful rainforest scenery. The summit is not included unless you take a longer package (3D2N via Senaru–Sembalun).

2D1N Senaru:
Hike up to Senaru Crater Rim (2,641m).
Stunning views of Segara Anak Lake & summit.
Easier than summit programs, recommended for beginners or those short on time.
2D1N Sembalun (Summit):
Trek all the way to the Rinjani Summit (3,726m).
Very challenging: steep, sandy summit trail starting at midnight.
Suitable for experienced trekkers with strong fitness.

3D2N via Sembalun → Summit → Senaru (most popular):
Day 1: Open savannah trail.
Day 2: Summit at sunrise, then down to the lake & hot spring.
Day 3: Exit through Senaru rainforest.
Covers all highlights: Summit + Lake + Hot Springs.
3D2N via Senaru → Summit → Sembalun:
Day 1: Rainforest to Senaru Rim.
Day 2: Descend to Lake, then climb up to Sembalun Rim.
Day 3: Summit at sunrise, descend through Sembalun.
Harder first two days, but good option if you want summit at the very end.

Both programs cover the summit, Segara Anak lake, and hot springs, but the main difference is the pace and rest time.
3 Days / 2 Nights (3D2N) – Standard Program
Day 1: Trek from starting point (Sembalun or Senaru) to crater rim, camp overnight
Day 2: Midnight summit attempt (if from Sembalun side) → descend to lake & hot springs → climb up to other crater rim. Very long and demanding day (10–12 hours hiking).
Day 3: Descend through rainforest (Senaru or Torean) and finish.
Best for: Strong, fit trekkers who don’t mind long hiking days with less time to rest at the lake.
4 Days / 3 Nights (4D3N) – Relaxed Program
Day 1: Same as 3D2N (hike to crater rim).
Day 2: Summit attempt at sunrise (if starting from Sembalun), then descend to lake & hot springs. Camp overnight by the lake.
Day 3: Extra day to enjoy the lake, hot springs, and optional fishing. After lunch, hike up to the crater rim and camp again.
Day 4: Gentle descent through rainforest (Senaru or Torean).
Best for: Trekkers who want a less rushed experience, more time to relax, recover, and enjoy Rinjani’s natural beauty.
 Summary:
3D2N = “Highlights in short time” – challenging, compact, best if you’re fit and limited on time.
4D3N = “Relax & enjoy” – more comfortable pace, extra night at the lake, great for those who want both adventure & relaxation.

Torean Route (Exit Route, Not for Ascent)
The Torean trail is often chosen as an exit route from Segara Anak Lake because it provides a more direct and less demanding descent compared to Senaru.
Key Features of Torean Route
✅ Easier on the knees – avoids the steep climb back up to Senaru Rim (2,641 m).
✅ Scenic beauty – lush valleys, dramatic cliffs, flowing rivers, and hidden waterfalls along the way.
✅ Closer to nature – the trail follows rivers and green landscapes, giving a more tropical jungle feel.
⚠️ Trail condition – some sections are very steep and slippery, requiring extra caution, especially in wet weather.
❌ Less panoramic camping – unlike Senaru Rim, Torean does not offer wide crater rim views for overnight camps.
Senaru Route vs. Torean Route (from Segara Anak Lake)
Via Senaru
Must climb back up from the lake (±2,000 m) to Senaru Rim (2,641 m) → tough and physically demanding.
Long, steep descent through dense rainforest
Rewards with spectacular views from Pelawangan Senaru, overlooking the crater, valleys, and Lombok landscapes.
Best for trekkers who want panoramic photo opportunities and don’t mind the challenge.
Via Torean
Descends directly from the lake without climbing back up.
Easier overall, especially for those with knee issues or limited stamina.
Highlights include tropical valleys, rivers, waterfalls, and cliffs—a very different kind of beauty.
Less dramatic panoramas, but more immersive jungle and river scenery.
Which Route is Better?
It depends on your preferences and fitness level:
Choose Senaru if you want epic panoramic views and don’t mind the extra challenge.
Choose Torean if you prefer a gentler exit with lush tropical scenery and waterfalls, or if you want to reduce strain on your knees.
Many trekkers today choose Sembalun ascent → Lake → Torean exit as the most balanced option: challenging summit climb, time at the lake & hot springs, then a beautiful and easier descent.

Not everyone wants (or is able) to push for the summit — and that’s completely fine. You can still enjoy Mount Rinjani’s beauty, crater views, the lake, and hot springs without the demanding climb to 3,726 m.
Here are the best options:
1. 2D1N Senaru Crater Rim (No Summit)
Highlights:
Trek through lush rainforest with monkeys and birds.
Stunning views of the crater rim (2641 m) overlooking Segara Anak Lake and the Rinjani summit in the distance.
Sunset and sunrise from the rim are unforgettable.
Level: Moderate (about 6–7 hours uphill on Day 1, 5–6 hours down on Day 2).
Best for: Beginners, families, or trekkers with limited time who still want to experience Rinjani’s magic.
2. 3D2N Senaru → Lake → Torean (Skip Summit)
Highlights:
Same rainforest trek as 2D1N on Day 1, plus an extra day to reach Segara Anak Lake.
Relax at the lake and natural hot springs.
Exit via Torean route with waterfalls, rivers, and lush valleys.
Level: Moderate to challenging (longer distances but no summit push).
Best for: Trekkers who want a deeper Rinjani experience without the extreme challenge of the summit.
3. Custom Itinerary (Flexible)
We can also arrange a tailored trek where you:
Camp longer at the lake or hot springs.
Exit via Senaru or Torean depending on your preference.
Skip the summit climb entirely but still explore Rinjani’s most beautiful spots.
✅ Recommendation:
If you have only 2 days, go for the Senaru Crater Rim (2D1N).
If you have 3 days, choose Senaru → Lake → Torean (3D2N) for a richer experience.
With these options, you’ll enjoy the essence of Rinjani — rainforest, crater, lake, and hot springs — without needing to summit.

How many guides and porters are prepared for each program?
We always assign guides and porters carefully to balance safety, comfort, and service quality:
Guide ratio

  • 1 licensed guide for every 3 trekkers.
  • For smaller or private trips, you’ll still have your own dedicated guide.

Porter ratio

  • Normally 2–3 porters for every 2 trekkers.
  •  Porters carry all group equipment such as tents, sleeping bags, mattresses, cooking utensils, food supplies, and dining set-up.
  • On deluxe/private trips, additional porters may be assigned to carry extra comfort items (chairs, tables, pillows, more fresh food, etc.).

What you carry yourself

  •  Guests only need to carry a small personal daypack with essentials (water, snacks, camera/phone, sunscreen, warm jacket, etc.).
  • If you prefer, you can request an extra private porter to carry your personal backpack for an additional fee 30usd per days.
  • This system ensures every group is well-supported, safe, and comfortable from start to finish.
  1. Porters carry all group equipment: tents, sleeping bags, mattresses, cooking gear, and meals
  2. Trekkers only need to carry a personal daypack (max 8–10 kg) with essentials: water, snacks, jacket, camera, etc.
  3. If you want a porter to carry your personal backpack, this can be arranged with extra cost.

Standard arrangement:
• 2 trekkers share 1 tent (this is the default for all packages).
• If the number of participants is odd, one tent will be shared by 3 persons.
Special request:
• If you prefer to have 1 tent per person, this can be arranged with an additional cost.
Tent quality:
• All tents are waterproof, clean, and spacious.
• Equipped with thick foam mattresses, sleeping bags, and pillows to ensure comfort during cold nights.
• Larger family/group tents are also available upon request.
This system keeps the trek eco-friendly while still giving flexibility for private comfort if needed.

Rinjani Zero Waste Tips

Rinjani Zero Waste: Protecting Indonesia’s Iconic Volcano and Its Environment

Mount Rinjani, an active volcano located on the island of Lombok, Indonesia, is one of the most popular trekking destinations in Southeast Asia. With its breathtaking landscapes, rich biodiversity, and cultural significance, Rinjani attracts thousands of hikers every year. However, the growing number of visitors poses a serious environmental challenge: waste management.

In response to this challenge, the concept of “Rinjani Zero Waste” has emerged as a vital movement to preserve the mountain’s natural beauty and protect its ecosystems. By encouraging sustainable practices and responsible tourism, Rinjani Zero Waste aims to reduce pollution, protect local communities, and ensure that future generations can enjoy the splendor of this iconic volcano.

Clean-Up is Not a Long-Term Solution for Waste Management at Rinjani

Is clean-up truly a long-term solution for waste management at Rinjani? We believe the answer is no because, despite our continuous efforts over the past few years, the situation remains unchanged. In 2021, we organized a large-scale clean-up event over 3 days and 2 nights, in collaboration with several influencers, including Benjamin Ortega. During this event, we successfully removed 1,6 tons of waste from the Rinjani campsite.

However, this is just one part of the problem. At Green Rinjani, we also require all porters and guides on our trips to bring down more waste than they carry up, with the goal of making Rinjani a cleaner, waste-free mountain.

But what happens after we clean up? Every time we remove the waste, new trash appears in the same spots the next day. This recurring issue is why we firmly believe that clean-up is not a sustainable long-term solution for waste management.

So, How Can You Trek Sustainably?

Packing for a sustainable trek requires careful thought and preparation. Trekking with lightweight gear, high-energy food, and plenty of water can lead to a significant increase in disposable plastic use, which is often seen as “convenient” and cheaper compared to more responsible alternatives.

This problem is widespread in Indonesia, particularly on Mount Rinjani, where you can find small plastic wrappers, candy packaging, energy bars, and sugary drink bottles scattered along the trails. However, we understand that adopting more eco-friendly practices can be challenging and may incur additional costs.

That’s why, in 2025, we are committed to promoting zero-waste trekking on Mount Rinjani as part of our ongoing environmental efforts.

Trek with Purpose — Eco-friendly and Sustainable

Trekking is not just about reaching the summit. It’s about giving back to nature and protecting Mount Rinjani for future generations.
With our “One Trekker, One Tree” program, each guest can plant a tree during their trek. This directly supports reforestation and protects the fragile environment of Mount Rinjani.

Seasonal Tree Planting by Route

  • Sembalun Route (April – June only).

Tree planting is available during the cooler months of April to June. This is the best season for young trees to survive. From July to September, the weather is too hot and dry, so planting is not possible.

  • Senaru Route (Year-round)

On the Senaru trail, tree planting is possible all year. The jungle provides shade and moisture, creating the right conditions for new trees to grow. Every tree planted helps restore the mountain’s balance, prevent erosion, and create a healthier environment for both wildlife and local communities.

Zero Waste Trekking Program

Starting this year, we are proud to introduce Zero Waste Trekking — trekking with purpose.

  • Our team carries trash sacks to collect not only our waste but also rubbish left behind by others.
  • Guides and porters receive bonuses for each sack they bring down.
  • We enforce a strict rule: no trash carried down = no full salary.
  • We have pledged to make Mount Rinjani a Zero Trash Zone.
  • When you trek with us, you join this mission.

Top-notch equipment and expert team

We invest in updated, high-quality equipment. Our guides and porters are more than trekking experts — they are storytellers who love to share Lombok’s nature and culture.
