Rinjani Zero Waste Tips
Rinjani Zero Waste: Protecting Indonesia’s Iconic Volcano and Its Environment
Mount Rinjani, an active volcano located on the island of Lombok, Indonesia, is one of the most popular trekking destinations in Southeast Asia. With its breathtaking landscapes, rich biodiversity, and cultural significance, Rinjani attracts thousands of hikers every year. However, the growing number of visitors poses a serious environmental challenge: waste management.
In response to this challenge, the concept of “Rinjani Zero Waste” has emerged as a vital movement to preserve the mountain’s natural beauty and protect its ecosystems. By encouraging sustainable practices and responsible tourism, Rinjani Zero Waste aims to reduce pollution, protect local communities, and ensure that future generations can enjoy the splendor of this iconic volcano.
Clean-Up is Not a Long-Term Solution for Waste Management at Rinjani
Is clean-up truly a long-term solution for waste management at Rinjani? We believe the answer is no because, despite our continuous efforts over the past few years, the situation remains unchanged. In 2021, we organized a large-scale clean-up event over 3 days and 2 nights, in collaboration with several influencers, including Benjamin Ortega. During this event, we successfully removed 1,6 tons of waste from the Rinjani campsite.
However, this is just one part of the problem. At Green Rinjani, we also require all porters and guides on our trips to bring down more waste than they carry up, with the goal of making Rinjani a cleaner, waste-free mountain.
But what happens after we clean up? Every time we remove the waste, new trash appears in the same spots the next day. This recurring issue is why we firmly believe that clean-up is not a sustainable long-term solution for waste management.
So, How Can You Trek Sustainably?
Packing for a sustainable trek requires careful thought and preparation. Trekking with lightweight gear, high-energy food, and plenty of water can lead to a significant increase in disposable plastic use, which is often seen as “convenient” and cheaper compared to more responsible alternatives.
This problem is widespread in Indonesia, particularly on Mount Rinjani, where you can find small plastic wrappers, candy packaging, energy bars, and sugary drink bottles scattered along the trails. However, we understand that adopting more eco-friendly practices can be challenging and may incur additional costs.
That’s why, in 2025, we are committed to promoting zero-waste trekking on Mount Rinjani as part of our ongoing environmental efforts.
